Biomedical Research Center `Alexander Fleming´
BSRC Alexander Fleming is a top-ranked Greek research organisation focusing on scientific and technological excellence, training and innovation in biomedical sciences. The center has gained international recognition for its pioneering research towards understanding the molecular and cellular basis of human diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders and others, and for the development of new approaches for their diagnosis and treatment. Fleming’s strength lies in the development and characterisation of animal models that mimic human diseases and the center has invested heavily in relevant infrastructures.
Fleming has established state-of-the-art facilities, including animal facilities, transgenesis and cryopreservation, genomics, proteomics, flow cytometry, bioimaging, microCT, endoscopy, histopathology and BioIT Units. Fleming coordinates the national infrastructure InfrafrontierGR and is a founding member of INFRAFRONTIER GmbH. InfrafrontierGR offers analysis of mouse models as filters for ‘disease-oriented’ characterisation of mutations. The infrastructure focuses on inflammatory phenotyping (intestinal, joint, neurological, tumor-associated and infectious inflammation) and is currently developing pipelines for metabolic syndromes, neurodegenerative and behavioral disorders.
Fleming also coordinates ELIXIR-GR and cooperates closely with infrastructures for personalised medicine, bioimaging and others.
