A Closer Look at the Laboratory Animal Genetic Reporting (LAG-R) Guidelines

The recently published Laboratory Animal Genetic Reporting (LAG-R) guidelines aim to enhance the reporting of genetic information for animal models. Developed by international experts and co-signed by learned societies and international consortia, the framework tackles the widespread issue of incomplete genetic reporting in animal research.

The current lack of detailed genetic information in research reports can hinder reproducibility and scientific relevance. The LAG-R guidelines offer a solution by providing clear recommendations for authors to describe existing genetic data without requiring additional experiments. These guidelines complement the established ARRIVE guidelines, with a specific focus on genetics.

Researchers are encouraged to consider LAG-R throughout their projects, from design to publication. However, challenges such as incomplete information for received animals or lack of genetic expertise may arise. To ensure widespread adoption, awareness, education, and stakeholder involvement are essential. Journals, reviewers, and funding bodies can play crucial roles in promoting and enforcing these guidelines.
